Can you guess the repair cost?

Postby macfly » Sat Nov 21, 2009 1:51 am

Last weekend my friend Christian and I were literally run over by a bicycle, which ended up with all three of us on the ground. Luckily no one was hurt

The bicycle was flying along the hedge you see in the pictures, on the wrong side of the road and ran into us just as we pulled out of a side road. He apologetically admitted total responsibility, and was a gentleman about his error, which was good thing. I was gutted, my brand new MM look thrashed, while Christian's GSA barely had a mark on it, at least not one that wasn't there already!

Anyhow, try guess how much it is going to cost to repair the damage caused by the 5-10 mph topple over you see here. My guess right after the accident was $4,000.00

Based on my accident in september I guess at least 4000 € maybe 5000 €, so between $6000 and $7000 ?
Carbon is very expensive, the carbon unit around the headlight only costs 700 € .

 considering the speed there is more damage than I would expect. Almost me cry to see a mm in this state...

Best of luck getting everything sorted.

I feel bad for you and the bike (mostly the bike though...) I would guess $7K... This issue with motorcyclists and the lycra bicycle crowd is an ongoing issue here in California, particularly on weekends and backroads. The bicyclists feel it is their "right" to ride 2,3 and even 4 abreast... I am fortunate that I usually work weekends and do most of my riding mid-week. It has gotten to the point here in Santa Barbara -Ventura County, that I rarely ride at all on a Sat/Sun.

They really are a menace...

Postby macfly » Tue Nov 24, 2009 12:13 am

Happily the one that got us was a gentleman menace, but a menace nonetheless. I really think bicycles should be licensed, registered and also have to obey all road rules, with points on their driving license for not respecting the road, and other road users. All right, I'll get off the soapbox, thats my rant for the moment!

Hey Andy,
Did you get your estimate yet? Taking it to BMWVC?

Yes, the bike is over there now, they came to pick it up last Thursday, and the estimate is in. No one guessed the full amount, but most half the votes were close - the total is a whisker under $8,000 for what was really little more than a tip over! :o

I guess lightness and strength don't really go together

Thank heavens for State Farm

Postby macfly » Sun Nov 29, 2009 6:22 pm

Well, just two weeks to the day after the accident I have a check for the repairs from State Farm, I'm very impressed, and happy that my insurance company take such good care of me!

Hopefully the parts will not take too long to arrive, and I'll be back on the road in time to add some nice posts before the rains come.

Waiting for spares...

It is cool that nothing terrible happened, and the damage was all taken care of, but man it sucks knowing I may not get my bike back for weeks! :(

The other thing I didn't consider was the difficulty of actually getting the parts, coming up on the two month mark, and still no sign of the fragile carbon replacement parts!

WTF?????
[b]That is a totally unreasonable time frame. Have you contacted BMW -NA? There must be some guideline with regard to time allowed for a fix... I am going to order some sliders for sure now...The headlight assembly and farring look to be the same as the X Moto (?)

To be honest the weather kind of sucks, I haven't even managed to get my R1200S out for a spin, so I'm not too stressed about it. When it comes back it'll be sweet, that's for sure!!

Tuesday!!

Postby macfly » Sat Mar 20, 2010 12:20 am

Well that little incident only took four months to get fixed.

She's back Tuesday, and I can't wait! She is returning with Racetech revalved and resprung front suspension, and a new stiffer rear spring, Renzaco seat, Touratech crash bar and a few other little tweaks. Will review all the upgrades, but its been so long since I rode here I really won't know the difference!
